Repton’s '‘Golden Rules” campaign seek to highlight our amazing sports programme for our students.
In the 20th century, corporal punishment was a common disciplinary method in British curriculum schools. It often involved the use of canes, rulers, or straps to maintain discipline and order. This practice was widely accepted and implemented in both state and private schools.
Despite global efforts to eliminate corporal punishment, it remains prevalent in many parts of the world. According to the World Health Organization, around 60% of children aged 2-14 years regularly suffer physical punishment by their parents or other caregivers. In some countries, almost all students report being physically punished by school staff.
Illustrations from the 19th and 20th centuries often depicted corporal punishment in schools, reflecting the disciplinary practices of the time. These images typically showed students being caned, strapped, or paddled by teachers as a form of punishment for misbehavior. The scenes were often set in classrooms or headmasters' offices, with students lined up or watching in fear. These illustrations served as both a reflection of societal norms and a tool to reinforce the authority of educators.
Our new ad campaign will emphasize how sport can teach discipline, strength and perseverance to our students by emulating these 20th century illustrations and subverting expectations.
